The Science of a Brain Freeze
Did you know the fastest way to rid yourself of a brain freeze is to press your tongue against the roof of your mouth?
Brain freeze – or in medicine – sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia, occurs when a frozen or cold treat hits the roof of your mouth and the back of your throat. This results in a shock to the area where two of the brain’s most important blood suppliers meet: the internal carotid artery which feeds the whole brain and the anterior cerebral artery which runs along the front of your brain. The junction of these arteries contracts rapidly due to the cold so the brain compensates by sending extra blood to this area to try and warm it up. When the blood vessels expand really quickly, it triggers your pain receptors causing what is known as the brain freeze.
Interesting, don’t you think?
