Corneal Eye Transplant Surgery

The first successful corneal transplant was performed in 1905 by Dr. Eduard Zirm of the Czech Republic – making it one of the first types of transplant surgeries. More than 47,000 corneal transplants are done yearly in the US. In this video you see a deep anterior laminar keratoplasty (DALK) where the diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue from a recently deceased individual. A transplant is generally performed on individuals who have vision problems caused by thinning of the cornea, scarring of the cornea from severe infections or injuries and vision loss caused by cloudiness of the cornea, usually due to Fuchs’ dystrophy or diabetes in the developing world. Here is a list of the five healthiest foods for your eyes:

1. Carrots
2. Spinach and kale
3. Grapefruit and strawberries
4. Brussels sprouts
5. Seeds, nuts, and wheat germ
