The Mamba Mentality

Kickin' It like Kobe

Check out this incredible artwork Sahil Shah Art made for our organization!
He even added our logo to Kobe Bryant’s jersey.

For those of you that have been following this account for the past three and a half years, you may know that I am a huge believer in the #MambaMentality, a concept that Kobe Bryant gave birth to many years ago. The Mamba Mentality is a commitment to being the best version of yourself on a daily basis. It is a constant quest to try to be a better person than the person you were yesterday. Deep inside each of us, there is an undeniable force that drives our actions. In the creative realm, many of our greatest superheroes each have an alter ego (e.g., Diana Prince becoming Wonder Woman; Clark Kent becoming Superman; the The Incredible Hulk going green; Bruce Wayne becoming Batman; & Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man). This alter ego can be identified as a place that exists within these superheroes which allows them the ability to perform instinctively at the most extraordinary level. No fear, no limitations. Just action and results.

For Kobe Bryant, his alter ego is the Black Mamba, widely considered the world’s deadliest snake; a bite from this fearsome serpent can be fatal to human life in under twenty minutes. In this artwork, Sahil illustrates Kobe’s journey and the metamorphosis of him becoming the Black Mamba, as can be noticed by the snake skin on his chest and neck. This symbolizes how a mentality can quite literally transform us into our very own superhero! When we make the intention to nourish and believe in our inner-selves, it allows us to transform our biggest weaknesses into our greatest strengths. This mentality is what has helped me throughout medical school.

Just under four years ago, I created my own alter ego: MEDspiration – one that could deal with the stress and the high demands of medicine. Not only has it helped me cope with the workload of medical school, it has opened a space for incredible artists such as Sahil to illustrate this piece. This reminded me of why staying true to this mentality can even result in our wildest dreams coming true. I truly hope this serves as reminder to all the young visionaries and dreamers out there to not focus on the limits the world places on you, but rather, to look within and be competitive enough with yourself to unlock those treasures that lie deep within.
