Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year. More than AIDS, tuberculosis, and violence combined. Healthcare has classified alcohol consumption into three major categories:
1. ALCOHOL IN MODERATION: only one drink a day for a woman or up to two drinks a day for a man may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, lengthen life, improve libido, and help prevent against the common cold.
2. ALCOHOL ABUSERS: may drink only once or twice a week but indulge in binge drinking with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy alcohol consumption. College students and the age average age range of 21-40 are most commonly placed in this category.
3. ALCOHOLISM/ ALCOHOLIC: generally refers to alcohol addiction which is compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcoholic beverages, sometimes daily. Becomes clearly defined by detriment of the drinker’s health, personal relationships, and social standing. This is medically considered a disease.
