After a mother has delivered her child, she is expected to deliver this organ (the placenta). Delivery of the placenta is the third stage of labor in a normal delivery! The mother is expected to deliver the placenta 30 minutes following delivery of her child. Failure to do so in this time frame gives rise to a condition known as ‘retained placenta.’ The retained placenta is a significant cause of maternal mortality & morbidity throughout the developing world (it complicates 2% of all deliveries & has a case mortality rate of nearly 10% in rural areas). Common causes of delayed placenta delivery can be attributed to postpartum hemorrhage, inadequate uterine contraction, chorioamnionitis, & abnormal placental attachment (where the placenta is burrowed too deeply into the uterus & fails to detach – formally known as placenta accreta, increta &/or percreta). Perhaps the coolest thing I’ve learnt from my first few deliveries is how this organ is the reason each of us have a belly button! The cord we see at the top connects to the fetuses’ belly & is responsible for providing oxygen & nutrients for the growing baby from the mother, while also removing waste products from the baby’s blood!
