The Anatomy of Triple Bypass Surgery
Bypass surgery requires turning off the human heart and then jump starting it once the surgical bypass is complete, as seen at the end of this video. This triple bypass was performed on a thirty-nine year old man who displayed three partially blocked blood vessels on his angiogram.
In this procedure, the surgeon will create a different path of circulation bypassing the blocked vessels. Using resected veins from the patient’s lower leg, these veins will be connected to the patient’s internal mammary artery in his chest creating a brand new pathway for blood to travel to the heart. Four hours and three to four hundred stitches later, the patient’s heart is jump started once the new circulation is set in place.
